The following case is extracted from “The Art of Applying Comprehensive Metaphysics” Grand Dharma Function in Malaysia on 28 August 2011. Master Lu performed Totem Enquiries live on stage and answered questions from the audience to help them overcome difficulties in their health, career, and everyday issues.
When a person is asking Master Lu to perform Totem Enquiry, if a living person is being enquired, then the year of birth and the Chinese zodiac sign of that person should be stated. If a deceased person is being enquired, then the full name of the deceased and the exact written characters of the name should be stated.

Enquirer: Hi, Master Lu. Could you please take a look at a person born in 1959, year of the Pig.
Master Lu: 1959, year of the Pig.
Enquirer: Yes.
Master Lu: Male or female?
Enquirer: Male.
Master Lu: 1959, year of the Pig, male. Oh! Ah-ya! Let me tell you, in his lungs, a bit lower… In this location, I see there is a bit of inflammation. Also, there’s a sign of pulmonary oedema.
Enquirer: Yes, that’s correct.
Master Lu: Ah. After I finish performing Totem Enquiry for all of you, when you leave, don’t call me Master Lu. Call me Dr Lu. Alright?
Enquirer: How many Little Houses?
Master Lu: For the pulmonary oedema, you should ask him to recite the Great Compassion Mantra (Ta Pei Chou) 21 times per day. Let me tell you, only the recitation of the Great Compassion Mantra (Ta Pei Chou) would prevent people from having cancer.
Enquirer: He’s reciting it 49 times per day.
Master Lu: Good. And then perform Life Liberation.
Enquirer: He does it every week.
Master Lu: He performs Life Liberation every week? On the 1st and 15th of the lunar month would be enough. Or he can also just perform it once a month. But he must perform Life Liberation. Also, can he make a Great Vow? Does he believe in the Guan Yin Citta Dharma Door?
Enquirer: He’s performing the recitations himself.
Master Lu: That’s very good. Young man, can you recite for him?
Enquirer: Yes, I can.
Master Lu: Okay. You should show more filial piety. If you show filial piety, in the future, your children will also show filial piety to you. If you don’t show filial piety to your parents, in the future, your children also won’t show filial piety to you.
Enquirer: How many Little Houses is required?
Master Lu: Oh, a large number of Little Houses is required. As of today, 87 Little Houses. 87.
Enquirer: Any foreign spirits occupying the body?
Master Lu: Yes, there are. If there are no foreign spirits, why would I ask you recite Little Houses? Ah. Nonsense.
Enquirer: My second question is, would I be able to become a disciple of Master Lu?
Master Lu: Ah. This question doesn’t require Totem Enquiry. You want to become a disciple of Master Lu. Good. You need to work hard. To be Master Lu’s disciple, first of all, you need to be good and refrain from wrongdoings. Do you understand? Secondly, you need to have kindness and compassion. Be a person who knows how to take care of others, how to help others. Be this kind of person. Also, you need to have the power of Great Vows. In other words, “For the rest of my life, I will mindfully and sincerely perform recitations. I will be good to my parents. For the rest of my life, I will do my best to save and cross over people. I will treat others well.” Yes, young man, you should be like this. If you’re able to achieve this, I will take you in as a disciple, okay?
Enquirer: I have already achieved it.
Master Lu: He said he has already achieved it. He’s really not modest. Alright. If you have already achieved it, then you’re a good man. Okay then, you may go.
Enquirer: Thank you, Master Lu.
