The following case is extracted from “The Art of Applying Comprehensive Metaphysics” Grand Dharma Function in Malaysia on 28 August 2011. Master Lu performed Totem Enquiries live on stage and answered questions from the audience to help them overcome difficulties in their health, career, and everyday issues.
When a person is asking Master Lu to perform Totem Enquiry, if a living person is being enquired, then the year of birth and the Chinese zodiac sign of that person should be stated. If a deceased person is being enquired, then the full name of the deceased and the exact written characters of the name should be stated.

Master Lu: Hello.
Enquirer: Hi, Master Lu. My name is Chang Hsin Hung.
Master Lu: Ah. You don’t need to state your name. When I perform Totem Enquiry for a living person, there’s no need to state the name. Just the year of birth. Which year were you born, and what’s your Chinese zodiac sign?
Enquirer: 29th January, 1972.
Master Lu: 1973.
Enquirer: 29th January, 1972.
Master Lu: What’s your Chinese zodiac sign?
Enquirer: Year of the Pig.
Master Lu: Hm.
Enquirer: Um, I would like to ask Master Lu, I have always been working.
Master Lu: Let me tell you. First of all, your career is not smooth. You have many obstacles. You‘re a nice person. Everywhere there are people who are jealous of you. Do you understand? You have changed jobs before. Tell everyone if that is correct.
Enquirer: Correct. Master Lu, I would like to know if I should work abroad.
Master Lu: Pardon?
Enquirer: Work overseas.
Master Lu: Oh. Work overseas. Young man, let me tell you, you should be more tolerant and generous. You tend to be very sensitive. Well, relatively sensitive. With everything, you should have an open mind and be less sensitive. Do you understand?
Enquirer: I understand.
Master Lu: If you weren’t so sensitive, then you would be very good. You had a girlfriend that you broke up with because you were too sensitive. Tell everyone, is this correct?
Enquirer: Not correct. Ha ha ha ha.
Master Lu: You’re just mucking around. Oh. Girlfriend. You have a girlfriend sitting there right now. Okay, alright. Let me tell you. If you want to work overseas, you should tell me some general directions and I will take a look for you.
Enquirer: Brunei.
Master Lu: You can go.
Enquirer: Thank you. I would like to ask, Master Lu, about my health condition.
Master Lu: Oh. Young man, at such a young age your stomach is not good. Your digestive system is not good. Do you understand?
Enquirer: I understand.
Master Lu: For Malaysian Chinese, “I understand” means “Yes”. Do you understand?
Enquirer: I understand.
Master Lu: Okay, secondly, young man, let me tell you. Your lower back is not good. In the past, your lower back… I just saw that, on your Totem, in the lower back region, there is something. It looks like you have twisted it in the past.
Enquirer: I think I did.
Master Lu: Ah. I think I did. Let me teach you a Chinese phrase. “Correct”. If you want me to say a bit more about you, you need to say, “Correct”.
Enquirer: Ah! Correct.
Master Lu: Ah. Ha Ha. Alright.
Enquirer: Thank you, Master Lu.
Master Lu: Also, you should be careful with your relationship. Treat your partner a bit better, okay? You’re a nice person. Please perform your recitations mindfully and sincerely. I hope you can recite more Heart Sutra (Hsin Ching). Your mind would become increasingly more intelligent. And recite the Cundi Dharani (Chun Ti Shen Chou). Your career would become very smooth. Okay? Okay.
Enquirer: Thank you, Master Lu.
